Black as Fear Based Control
Black has a psychological dominance as how it has been used across systems, spaces, and emotions to enforce order and submission among individuals.
Black usually controls the way we hold our emotions and how we let them control our lives. For example: In business meetings or classroom discussions we might want to speak something but something stops us and that is the fear of being judged and fear of being wrong, at that time we are not able to express our thoughts or even how we feel, that is the point where black controls our life because we are scared of being judged and this usually leads to silence.
Usually In death anniversaries you might have witnessed people wearing black, that represents grief or silence of someone who would be coming back.
Darkness as a Tool of Psychological Power
Darkness limits visibility, and when people cannot see clearly, uncertainty increases. This uncertainty creates fear. Humans instinctively fear the unknown, and black amplifies this instinct.
A common real-life example is poorly lit spaces empty corridors, dark rooms, or streets at night. People become more cautious, quiet, and obedient to rules in such environments. Darkness reduces confidence and increases dependence on authority or guidance, making it a powerful tool of control.
It takes control over ones mind which leads that person to think in a different manner, where a person comes out of their comfort zone.
Mystery and Horror Symbolism
Also have you ever noticed how every mysterious or horror images, movies, shows or any drama is shown in black, how they symbolise black, itis central to horror symbolism as it shows dark shadows, black figures, unseen threats. Horror rarely shows the danger clearly; instead, it hides it. This mystery creates fear stronger than reality.
Also Authoritarian systems often use black to project dominance. Black uniforms, dark government buildings, and rigid, silent environments create psychological distance between authority and individuals. For eg, jails or military rooms, etc.
Black controls through fear, silence, and mystery. It creates obedience not by explanation, but by intimidation. While this form of control can enforce order, it often suppresses voice, confidence, and emotional freedom.
